Student involvement in campus activities was present at the College since its early years. The Cooperative Government Association (C.G.A.) was officially founded in March 2, 1910 “after five years of negotiation between the students and faculty”[1]. The C.G.A. began its trial period “during which students assumed individual and community responsibility ‘in the life and conduct of the College, and thus to develop self-control, and to promote loyalty to the College, at all time”[2]. Between 1961 and 1975, “the Cooperative Government Constitution was completely revamped, and discipline was placed in the hands of students. Students were taking an interest in the national political scene, but rather than protests they were engaged in more constructive activities such as running blood drives”[3]. It was during that time that the C.G.A. was renamed as the Hood College Student Government Association (HCSGA), although much of the responsibilities remained unchanged. The HCSGA of today is responsible for promoting the self-governance of the student body; listening to students’ concerns and opinions; directing students to the appropriate administrative personnel; and following up as needed.[4] Through its work, HCSGA have made an impact on student matters. For example, the 2012 HCSGA was able to work with administration to extend library hours the week prior and the week of final exam week[5] and was able to revive to-go dinner boxes9. HCSGA still host activities such blood drives, Give Your Heart to Hood Day, Easter Egg Hunts, Holiday Dinner and mock interviews. HCSGA is advised by the Dean of Students.
