First-Year Reads Presents: Yaa Gyasi

First-Year Read author Yaa Gyasi will talk about her novel Homegoing, the story of two Ghanaian half-sisters who are separated from all that they know–one in order to marry a British slaver and the other to be sold into slavery. Homegoing follows the diverging fates of seven generations of the sisters’ descendants both in Ghana, where repercussions from the slave trade and British colonialism shape the family, and in America, where the family is destined to bear the destructive legacy of slavery. Homegoing won the 2016 National Book Critics Circle’s John Leonard Prize for the best debut novel. A Q&A session and book signing will follow the 45-minute talk. Operation Whitecoat Screening and Talk

Operation Whitecoat tells the story of the more than 2,300 conscientious objectors who volunteered to serve their country by participating in U. S. Army medical experiments focused on developing defensive medical countermeasures against the Soviet Union’s bio-warfare capabilities. Arthur O. Anderson, MD, P’07, a member of the Hood College Board of Trustees, is an applied ethicist who has been involved in Human Research Subject Protections since 1975 when he was appointed chair of the USAMRIID IRB, called the Human Use Committee [HUC]. Jeff Welsh will give a talk on the little-known history of the World War II Victory Ship, named after Hood College. The SS Hood Victory contained a library of books and pictures of Hood College that sailed the seven seas from 1945 until the mid-1960s. Triforce Quartet

The Triforce Quartet began innocently as a short Zelda medley for an encore of a recital in early 2007, but the video of using traditional string quartet instruments to play music of classic games gained viral popularity later that summer. Thanks to this, cellist Chad Schwartz was able to combine his love for video games, along with years of classical training, to arrange a variety of video game themes that even non-gamers can enjoy. The African Diaspora in India
