Mother-Daughter activities began before the official founding of the Mother-Daughter Weekend. For example, the Y.W.C.A. sponsored the “Mother’s Weekend” event as early as 1926. The Mother’s Club was established in 1951 and met annually during May Day festivities. As part of the festivities, mothers and daughters “volunteered time and money for projects such as redecorating the infirmary and installing an intercom system in the dormitories”[1]. Additionally, in 1956 the first Mother-Daughter banquet was held.
The official Mother-Daughter Weekend took place in November 14-16, 1980. It was created to be an equivalent of the Dad and Daughter Weekend festivities. Although the event was not heavily publicized in the Blue & Grey, a schedule of the Mother-Daughter Weekend from 1985 indicate that festivities include a musical entertainment, fashion show, coffee hour, workshop, optional bus trip off-campus, theater show, game show and a reception at the President’s house. According to the Touchstone, Mother-Daughter Weekend transitioned into Family Weekend in 1995.
